About St. Vincent de Paul . . . St. Vincent was born of poor parents in the village of Pouy in Gascony, France, about 1580. Because of Vincent's intelligence, his father was determined to give him a school education. He finished his studies at the university of Toulouse, and in 1600, at the age of 20, was ordained a priest. Tradition says he while on a ship he was seized by pirates and sold into slavery in Tunisia. He eventually escaped. He became one of the chaplains of Queen Margaret of Valois and lived a very comfortable life while there. He devoted most of his life after this to ministering to the needs of the poor and sick. His works as a servant of God are too many to enumerate. Charity was his predominant virtue.
