About St. Veronica . . . The legend of St. Veronica, the woman who compassionately wiped the face of Jesus when He fell under the weight of His cross, is one of the most well-known and loved in Christianity. The ancient legend has only a vague tradition to support it. The miraculous image of our Lord's face was imprinted on the cloth that Veronica lovingly used to wipe it. It may well be true that a compassionate woman wiped the face of the suffering Jesus, and her action and tranditional memory are revered by Christians. The existence of a cloth claimed to be the original veil of Veronica is in St. Peter's in Rome. The memory of Veronica's act of charity is commemorated in the Stations of the Cross. While she is not included in the Roman Martyrology, she is honored with a feast day. Her symbol is the veil bearing the face of Christ and the Crown of Thorns.
