About St. Joshua . . . Joshua is an Old Testament figure. Joshua commanded the army of Israel, after the Exodus, in its battle with Amalec; was called the minister of Moses; accompanied the great lawgiver to and from Mount Sinai and into the tabernacle of the covenant; and acted as one of 12 spies whom Moses sent to view the land of Canaan as the Israelites left Egypt on their exodus. Joshua and Caleb were the only two who had confidence in God and would recommend a direct attack. Because of their faith and trust they were exempt from the condemnation of that generation to death in the wilderness. God instructed Moses to lay hands on Joshua to designate him leader to follow him. God commissioned Joshua to lead the Israelites into the promised land and conquer it as well as to distribute the land to the 12 tribes of Israel. The book of Joshua recounts his victories at Jericho, Ai, and other places.
