About St. Austin . . . St. Austin, Archbishop of Canterbury; also known as St. Augustine of Canterbury. St. Austin was born in Rome, Italy. He was sent by Pope Gregory the Great with 40 brother monks to evangelize the British Isles in 597. Before reaching the Isles, he returned to Rome amid terrifying tales of the Celts. Pope Gregory forced him to return to the British Isles. He established and spread the faith throughout England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury. He helped re-establish contact between the Celtic and Latin churches. St. Austin died in May 605 in Canterbury, England of natural causes.
