Elizabeth Bayley was born in New York in 1774, the daughter of a wealthy Episcopal family. She married Will Seton at the age of 19 and had five children and a happy family life until her husband's death from tuberculosis in 1803. In 1805, on Ash Wednesday, she became a Catholic. She founded the first free Catholic school in America in 1809 and became a nun and founded the Sisters of Charity that same year. The Sisters of Charity were very active in establishing schools, hospitals and orphanages. Elizabeth Seton also worked with the sick and poor. She died of tuberculosis in 1821. St. Elizabeth Seton was the first native-born American to be canonized by the Catholic Church. Paperback, 26 chapters, prayer and glossary, 126 pages. Ages 7-12.
