Bernadette was born in 1844 at Lourdes in the Pyrenees Mountains of France. Her family was very poor, and Bernadette was in poor health. While walking in the woods when she was 14 years old, she heard a noise and saw a light. In the light Bernadette saw a girl dressed in white, with a blue sash around her waist, yellow rose on each foot and Rosary beads on her arm - the Virgin Mary. The Blessed Virgin appeared to Bernadette 17 more times. People in the village did not believe Bernadette's story of her visions of the Blessed Mother. At Our Lady's request, Bernadette dug in the dirt near the mouth of a cave - a spring of water burst forth and water began to flow. The waters had healing powers for those who had great faith in God. The spring grew larger and many miracles happened for people who used this water. The Catholic Church recogized Lourdes as a holy place. Bernadette joined the Sisters of Charity; she died in 1879.
